The relentless growth of esports is something of the present as it goes from stride to stride creating job opportunities globally. South Africa and the rest of Africa have a lot of catching up to do in this department, but it is something that can definitely be done.

When you mention gaming to a total stranger, their response more often than not is they do not have time set aside for gaming, neither do they game at all. What many of these individuals do
not realise is that gaming doesn’t have to be through ‘the latest console’ or your ‘gaming pc.’

Gaming goes as far as just playing Candy crush every night on your phone before passing out into dreamland. The reality is there are more gamers than most people realise, and we are all gamers
in one way or another.

Gaming careers

We have had several interviews with managers of several different e-sporting organisations, and what they always seem to believe is that e-sporting creates so many different careers for people that have studied in so many different fields.

A successful enough e-sports team could need a marketing executive to watch over their marketing side. A tour manager is something they could need as the team travels to different places for competitions. The job opportunities are endless, and the market is only growing. You don’t necessarily need to be a player to have a career in gaming.

eSports games

The games available for actual eSports competitions vary from continent to continent.
Some of the most famous esports games that are found in most continents are FIFA,
Rocket League, CS:GO, and Call of Duty just to mention a few.

Betting on esports

Betting on esports has become an actual thing as more competitions take place. If you visit most betting platforms, you will find these tournaments available for betting, either under a sportsbook, or under esports as most people see it as its own entity.

eSports implemented into education

Some esports companies in South Africa are implementing it into education. Companies like RGB Gaming are mostly focused on providing esports to students in all sectors, primary, and secondary schools, and undergraduates. They believe that this is key for the learners of all levels in
preparing them for workplaces.

Besides the advantage that they believe it to have in studies, they believe this will also be key for computer literacy, which will directly translate well to most workplaces.

eSports tournaments

As much as this is a growing venture and you can find bigger tournaments all around the world. South Africa is slowly but surely making space for this new venture.

rAge Expo is some of the biggest events hosted in South Africa as it played host to a number of esports tournaments. The Intel African Master CS:GO tournament took place at last year’s
rAge Expo over a three day period.

RGB Gaming hosted a tournament at the Expo that included several South African schools. The tournaments are not as hard to find once you’re involved in the scene.
