Tue 3 Dec 2013 09.00 GMT Book review The Coral Island by R M Ballantyne (1858) ... Ship's boys, they are washed up alone on their coral island after a storm at sea. One example from the second half is the mention of cannibalistic South Sea islands, where Christian missionaries are travelling round converting the chiefs. The only thing I disagreed with was the boys stripping to swim. Although I remember reading books by the ton when I was of an age, it was this book, above all, that made me understand the power of language in the hands of imagination. And Ralph was in the middle and was the philosophical one. I think this must have been one of Ballantyne’s earlier works because it’s somewhat different than the other books I’ve read by him. From the telling style, I believed it was autobiographical. Knowing that Golding "updated" Coral Island I read it to see the comparisons. You could be unlucky and find yourself on a barren cay with no fresh water and no vegetation. Not so bad in the tropics, but he does it in the Baltic as well! Rather than glory in the military might and commercial prowess of empire, attempting to paint a thin veneer of moral purpose over Britain's overseas ventures, Ballantyne instead chooses to render the exotic, faraway islands of the South Pacific in minute detail, seemingly for the purpose of promoting the Christian Missionary cause, as well as telling a damned good tale of derring-do. A Classic! Written in 1858, when the Empire was still at its height and a few years before the American Civil War, Scottish writer, R.M.Ballantyne wrote what appears to be one of the first novels for children (try not to think of children in its modern conception) which featured only teenagers (or young adults). I liked very much the descriptions about the island, the trees, the valleys, the mountain and some specific sights which were named by the three boy: the Water Garden, The Diamond Cave and the Spouting Cliff.
