It is true. Will try to update my review soon – as I intend to watch the film again in the next month or so. Well, it is sad that something like that was happening.
But I guess a shred of hope and support was necessary to boost up the moral. Yes, this is the most painful, and sad motion picture I’ve ever seen. We can be lucky that we live in this time. The young actors were really convincing and I felt Delaney and Mercier almost like my friends. Its scary to see. we are just as bad as any other. | The acting is strong from the whole cast, including the children and that is a rarity these days. Aidan Quinn is always fantastic, but here excels himself in a performance up there with that in Michael Collins. A poignant & emotionally charged film set in 1939 Ireland, still pertinent to today's world. He carries the corpse out of the room. The injustice of these industrial or religious schools, the hypocrisy of these people that do outrageous actions in the name of God, everything is so very well portrayed in a dark atmosphere. The fact that Song for a Raggy Boy is based on a true story contributes to the powerful effect this movie has on its viewers. Instead, they were beaten and abused mentally and physically (some even sexually) from the religious staff there. The violence is appropriate but not overly graphic. He was strict but, at the same time, obviously caring for the boys he taught. The story is that of Franklin, a teacher in an Irish reformatory school who takes up the cause of the ill treated and neglected children being brutalised by Brother John, a rising star in the catholic church hierarchy, with the tacit approval of the other brothers, each labouring over their own guilty secrets. Franklin befriends the boy and interests him in poetry, some of it written by communist sympathisers. The acting is excellent as well – so good in fact that I felt like I knew some of the characters in person. It's so sad about Mercer being killed and I could of beaten that man!
Set in Italy, this is a story about an introverted 14 year old boy from Rome who has troubles fitting in.
A superb movie. The movie gets a 10, it definitely shook me. One casting problem was finding the ideal boy to play Liam Mercier, who the director felt was vital to cast well. The new teacher attempts to change all that and, as the story unfolds, I began to really like him. God still exists however. Young adolescent boys that have got into trouble are incarcerated in a 1930s Irish Reformatory School. FAQ The ritualistic violence, which the boys are forced to watch is particularly gruesome.
On a side note, I can't remember another recent film without female characters (although one appears in flashbacks). Delaney is an attractive boy and he receives the unwelcome attentions of a pedophile brother, Brother Mac (Marc Warren), who molests and rapes the boy in the school toilets. A devastating and brutal true story. Tentatively only now is the cinema beginning to address the issue, firstly with Peter Mullan's "The Magdalene Sisters", which wavered between broad comedy and tragedy to disconcerting effect and now with Aisling Walsh's superb "Song for a Raggy Boy", an altogether bleaker affair; indeed at times this is virtually unwatchable so intense is the brutality it depicts. But new lay teacher William Franklin (Aidan Quinn), fresh from the frontline of the Spanish Civil War, fights to liberate the boys from their oppressors. Song for a Raggy Boy is a 2003 Irish historical drama film directed by Aisling Walsh.
Word of Delaney's confession reaches Brother Mac who punishes the boy by forcing him under a cold shower naked, then giving him his clothes so they are also wet.
