The Danish Girl is a novel with so much potential gone wasted that, after reading it, you end up in pain like Lili in bed after her surgeries.

During World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians.
I imagine a man who wants to live as a woman in early 20th century Europe would face a lot more adversity than disapproval by a few doctors and his father. Lili and Gerda then return to Denmark. Both are artists, Einar preferring landscapes and she portraits.
I can't say that I understand everything that was changed but it certainly didn't stop me from enjoying the book. Is there any backround information or is it just the movie in words? The Danish Girl, as Ebershoff stated, does not try to tell a true story. The couple moves to Paris, where Greta tracks down Hans, a childhood friend of Einar who has now become an art dealer. Greta and her brother Carlisle take to see many doctors, who all misdiagnose him and want to either commit him for schizophrenia, or perform a lobotomy. Somewhere along the way this turned into complete trash.
He feels as though he should be Lili all the time, and contemplates suicide. After seeing the film, almost a year ago, I can tell that Mr. Tom Hooper, the director, has done a very good job.
The story that’s truly intriguing is the one that belongs to Vikander as Einar’s wife, Gerda—a fellow painter who struggled to be taken seriously in her husband’s shadow until she asks Einar to sit for a portrait of a ballerina and gets her first glimpse of his feminine side. Gerda starts to paint Lili more often, and these paintings spark popularity for Gerda. Take a look back at the career of Alicia Vikander on and off the big screen. I can't believe that I'm saying this, but the movie has got to be better than this book. This is a fictionalized story. One day, Anna Fonsmark, a friend of Gerda, must cancel her scheduled painting session. She dreams of becoming a painter, but is uncertain of her talent and her focus. Rated R by ... to Copenhagen, where they stayed until WWI frightened them back to the West Coast. Art & Costume Design are fabulous. Einar Wegener (played by Eddie Redmayne) and his wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) are a happily married couple. Eccentric character? I've never met a character move forgiving and understanding than this one. Vikander won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and Redmayne was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. When the surgery in performed, it is discovered that Einar had been born with ovaries which were undeveloped, making him also biologically female.
In a way I appreciate this novel for showing me how far and how fast we've come.
Lili then starts having many nosebleeds and stomachaches, which leads to Gerda making Lili visit a doctor named Dr. Hexler. One day, they venture out to the Artist’s Ball with Einar dressed as Lili, and tell the others in attendance that she is a cousin of Einar. for some sexuality and full nudity. An innocent enough request by Gerda to her husband leads to Einar exploring his feminine side. Rather than demonstrate the difficult journey of a member of the trans community, this author chose to portray the experience of someone with dissociative identity disorder which is definitely not the same thing. I liked it for the most part. “The Danish Girl” may seem zeitgeisty through sheer timing—and that may seem cynical on the surface—but it’s clear that its heart is in the right place. A title card reads that it is the year 1926 in Copenhagen, Denmark. (Those cheekbones! Even the NY Times review of this novel from 2000 egregiously confuses sexuality with gender, whereas just the week I'm writing this thanks to Diane Sawyer's interview with Bruce Jenner a few more people understand the difference between the two. I loved the movie, is this worth reading then? While Gerda sees that exploration all in fun, it becomes more for Einar, who, hearkening back to a time long ago in his past, ultimately allows himself truly to believe that he is a woman, "Lili", born into a male body. You can help us out by revising, improving and updating Lili and Henrik fall in love again while Gerda and Hans also start falling in love. The 19th Wife was made into a television movie that has aired around the globe. I also found Greta unrealistic.
